Fish may be the initial draw –

But it's by no means the only attraction.

Connemara is one of the most popular vacation destinations in Ireland – and the region offers a lot more than great fishing.connemara Both anglers and non-angling companions will enjoy visiting the picturesque villages of Clifden, Cleggan, Leenane and Roundstone, touring historic sites and ancient ruins, strolling the Victorian gardens at the Kylemore Abbey, and hiking well-travelled trails over the mountains and bogs of Connemara National Park. Shoppers will find a large selection of Celtic jewelry, Irish woolens, Aran sweaters, local pottery, and regional art and antiques.

Towns and Villages

Clifden is Connemara's largest town and a center for shopping, pubs and restaurants. Nearby Roundstone is one of Ireland's most scenic fishing villages and hosts pubs, restaurants and a small bodhran (Irish drum) factory. Cleggan is a few miles north of Clifden on the seashore and the departure port for the mail boat trip to Inishbofin Island. Nearby Claddaghduff is on the way to Orney Island, which is only accessible during low tide. Leenane is a lovely fishing village perched on the edge of Ireland's only fjord, Killary Harbour.

Admittedly, you might be remiss to spend

the entire time fishing.

It's no wonder that Connemara is a favorite vacation destination for both the Irish and Europeans – there's so much to do:

Golf:

The Connemara Championship Golf Links are on par with any in Ireland, Scotland or Britain. 27 holes meander along the Atlantic coast and back up into the hills, framed by a backdrop of the beautiful Twelve Bens mountain range. The main course was designed by Eddie Hackett and measures over 7,000 yards while rated for a par 72. During play you'll see an historic castle, Connemara ponies and wild swans. Located in Ballyconneely, a few miles south of Clifden, the oceanside clubhouse features a restaurant and bar, and the pro shop rents clubs and golf carts (called buggies) and is well-staffed with expert caddies.

Horseback Riding:

Three high-quality riding centers offer treks of every description for riders of all skill levels. You'll ride on Connemara ponies, which are actually large, handsome horses said to have descended from Spanish stallions that swam ashore when the Armada was wrecked in a fearsome storm off the coast near Clifden in 1588. Riding hats and boots are available for rent, and riding lessons are available by appointment.

Hill Walking

The Irish have perfected the art and pastime of hill walking, and Connemara offers some of the most enjoyable walking adventures in Ireland. Whether you trek over the mountains, across the moors or through the bogs, we can guarantee you'll see sights and enjoy outdoor experiences you've never even imagined before. Two local companies provide free advice – as well as experienced guides and scheduled walking tours tailored to the physical abilities of almost everyone.

Traditional Music

Connemara is an important center for traditional Irish music, and many of the pubs in Roundstone, Clifden, and the outlying villages have scheduled and unscheduled "sessions" in the evenings. The owner or manager of your B&B, country house or hotel will know what's going on in town, so don't hesitate to ask – and join in the craic (fun).

There’s more to Connemara than amazing fishing.

Not that there needs to be.

The best part of visiting Connemara is the wealth of things to do in addition to fishing. The scenery alone is worth driving around the region to see, so be sure to take some time to visit the many sites Connemara has to offer. Here are a few of our favorites:

Connemara National Park

Located on the north slope of the Twelve Bens mountain range, this 7,000 acre wilderness park is composed of scenic mountains, expanses of bogs, heaths, grasslands and woodlands that are crisscrossed by well-maintained hiking trails.

www.connemaranationalpark.ie

Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden

Steeped in history, romance and tragedy, the magnificent Kylemore Abbey, gothic chapel, tea room and adjoining 6-acre Victorian walled garden compose one of the most popular tours in the west of Ireland.

www.kylemoreabbeytourism.ie

Connemara Heritage & History Centre

A reconstructed crannóg, ring fort and a clochaun gives a glimpse into life in Connemara during ancient times. The Dan O'Hara's Homestead recreates life in Connemara in the 19th century, and shows the hardships endured by tenant farmers. Located in Lettershea, a few miles east of Clifden on the N59.

www.connemaraheritage.com

The Sheep And Wool Centre

If you like sheep, and you're interested in the old methods of the woolen industry, this is the place to visit. Located in Leenane, north of Clifden.

Breakfast:

Most hotels, country houses and B&Bs provide breakfast as part of your stay. A full Irish breakfast is a sight to behold, with eggs, a rasher of bacon (which are much larger and meatier than our miserable strips of pork belly), two different sausages (don't ask what's in them), a broiled tomato and an assortment of muffins, breakfast rolls, and fresh-baked breads with homemade jellies and jams. connemaraIrish breakfast tea is as hearty as the breakfast, and will clean out your cobwebs quicker than anything Starbucks ever brewed. But, for the timid eater, you can always order a soft-boiled egg, dry toast and coffee, and no one will tease you for being faint hearted. Many offer locally produced foods, which are an especially nice start to a big day.

Restaurants:

Restaurant food can be quite good, but can also be expensive due in part to the euro vs. the value of the dollar and the 13.5% value added tax. So read the menus posted outside most restaurants (the tax is usually built into the prices on the menu) before you rush in for a quick bite. The Irish eat their supper much later than Americans – often as late as 8:00 or 9:00 at night, so many restaurants serve "early bird specials" at reduced prices starting at 5:30 PM, which can be a good value. Others offer specially priced two- and three-course dinners where you choose from a selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts. While tipping rates are the same as in the US or Canada, check you bill carefully to see if a service charge has already been added before automatically leaving your tip.

Pubs

Our favorite way to economize at mealtime is to eat in a pub. "Pub grub" is hearty, simple fare ranging from traditional fish and chips and Irish stew, to fresh-shucked oysters and other local seafood.clifden_pubs

Drinking a pint of Guinness in a real Irish pub is about as pleasant a pastime as anything you could wish for. That's in part because pubs are centers of recreation, socializing, entertainment and family gatherings for the neighborhoods they serve ("pub" is short for "public house"). Everyone is always welcome, and American visitors seem to be especially welcome. Just be prepared to answer a lot of friendly questions, especially if you're of Irish descent!

And, you needn't feel out of place if you order a non-alcoholic beverage like tea, coffee or a soda when visiting a pub, because plenty of the regulars do, too. The point is to enjoy the craic (fun), have a good time and hang around long enough to enjoy the music should a session begin after the supper plates are cleared.

When drinking in a pub, if you sit or stand at the bar, everyone will talk to you, which is great fun. If you prefer some privacy, sit at a side table or in a "snug" (a partitioned area with a table & chairs), and everyone will leave you alone.

And, should you find yourself sitting with a group and someone buys a round for everyone at the table, do not fail to buy your round when it's your turn.

Special Note of Warning: The Irish police, or Garda, are intolerant when it comes to driving under the influence. The legal limit in Ireland is a BAC of .08%, which is strictly enforced. Fortunately, there are great taxi services in both Clifden and Roundstone, so if you're planning an evening of merrymaking, book a cab ahead of time. Ask your host to assist you, if need be.

Special Events in Connemara

There's always a lot going on in Connemara, both for anglers after fishing hours – or for non-angling companions during the day. When planning your angling trip to Connemara, check out our list of festivals, music sessions and other events so you can plan your travel to coincide with whatever interests you. A few of the major events contribute to an increase in traffic, accommodation prices (with decreased availability), crowds and general congestion, so it might be worth booking travel when there are no large events scheduled and the area's hotels and towns are less crowded and more tranquil. When in doubt, ask the manager of the lodging you plan to visit for advice.
