The Connemara Fly-Fishing Sampler
It is not uncommon for web site visitors to email us for assistance planning their angling trip to Connemara. So in 2013, we decided we would host a few seasonal trips designed to introduce fly anglers to fishing the region and its fisheries. Our first trip is scheduled for May 2013, details below:
8 days/7 nights | € 2,750 ($3,675 USD) All Inclusive
May 14 - 21, 2013
Join us for 8 days / 7 nights in Ireland’s amazing Connemara, where we will fly fish for native brown trout and atlantic salmon in the region’s fabled rivers and loughs. Guided by experienced local ghillies, and driven by chauffeur and minibus through the most rugged and beautiful landscapes in the west of Ireland, this is a special opportunity to sample the best angling in Connemara in the company of a small group of fellow fly fishers.
Our base with be the historic Anglers Return (www.anglersreturn.com) located on the east bank of the lower Ballynahinch River and across from the vast Roundstone Bog. Day trips will include fishing the many loughs and connecting rivers in Connemara and south Mayo, including a special day trip to Lough Mask (or Corrib) to fish the famous mayfly hatch. Our exact fishing itinerary will be determined upon arrival and based on current local conditions and fishing reports.
Evenings will feature dinners at some of the finest restaurants in Connemara, and an opportunity to enjoy evening sessions of traditional Irish music in local pubs. Special events will include an entomology and fly tying demonstration – and on-the-water Spey casting demonstrations/lessons.

About the Host:
The host of our fly fishing week is Lynn Hill at The Anglers Return – the beautiful, historic mid-1800s guesthouse overlooking the Ballynahinch river. The Anglers Return is the perfect place to call home during your week fishing. Awarded a "Bridgestone's 100 Best Places to Stay" in Ireland in 2012, you will find yourself feeling as though you have lived in this lovely old country house for years.
Hostess, Lynn Hill, who has run this guesthouse for over 40 years, looks after her guests very well, making sure they are happy and comfortable for their entire stay. Rooms are tastefully decorated with period antiques and the sitting room, with an open fire, is an enchanting place to relax during breaks or at the close of the day. The large, spacious dining room, with its high ceiling and wonderful decorations, is where we will gather each morning for your choice of breakfast options – including a full Irish breakfast.
Meals:
During the week, you will sample some of Connemara's finest dining options. Each morning we will dine at The Anglers Return for a hearty Irish breakfast. Choose from organic cereals, egg dishes, homemade breads, scones, jellies and jams, or slow-cooked porridge (oatmeal) spiced with sun-dried raisins, cranberries and fresh cinnamon. Everything is sourced locally even the eggs which come from Anglers Return's very own hens. Herbs for teas are picked from Lynn's garden, and fresh fruit is served in season. Dinners will be served in some of Connemara's finest restaurants – some nights in the seaside villages of Roundstone or Clifden – or just down the road a few miles from The Anglers Return at the Ballynahinch Castle pub. Tea and snacks will be served during breaks. Lunches will be enjoyed at the various fisheries pubs or local village's cafes and pubs. All meals are included, with the exception of some alcoholic beverages. Evenings will include sampling local traditional music sessions.
The Rooms:
The Anglers Return, a wonderful historic country house, offers five very comfortable, mid-sized bedrooms with one double room ensuite and four sharing two bathrooms with showers. Each room has its own washbasin and is outfitted with robes for the short dash across the hall to the bathrooms. They're all individually and tastefully decorated and furnished with traditional period antiques, very clean – and ultra-comfortable beds! Rooms options include doubles ideal for couples, and twin rooms ideally suited for two adults sharing. Single supplement is offered at an extra fee if you prefer a private room (inquire at time of reservation). All of the rooms are offered on a first come first serve basis, so reserve your space early. We will, of course, do our very best to accommodate you.
